Job Roles and Responsibilities
As a director essentially i will be leading on set prioritising shots and scenes in terms of looking at the time we have to film and location. My main responsibility being that all shots are filmed according to the genre and desired atmosphere wanted to be achieved. Also i am in charge of the sound, lighting, set and finally editing. On set i have to make sure that all cast and crew members are familiar with their role and understand what they are doing instructing the cameramen and cast making suggestions in order to improve the quality of our film. It is important that i take responsibility for all the filming equipment used and ensure that all equipment is collected and returned on time.
During post production i will work closely with me other crew members editing our film using the required shots needed working together through the technical process of editing reaching the final cut version of our film hopefully achieving a high standard of work produced. Throughout this process i must help motivate my team members and encourage them to appreciate good results.
As i Director i understand that there are certain skills i must attain certain skills to achieve good work also research and gain new skills. I must look more in depth at different types of shots used in the film industry that dominate the screen to create a certain effect as i must be visually creative gaining artistic skills on set. Most importantly i must be a good leader and know the required takes that must be met being confident within myself and being able to rely on my team members delegating them and being able to negotiate reasonably. I realise that i also must be able to work well under pressure in order to succeed. I must be aware of key aspects that go in producing the film in relation to the constraints of the film’s budget and filming schedule. In the professional world often film Directors are also assigned other roles such as producing and writing. However due to the scale of my production i will only be assigned for the role of director and will also be contributing to the script writing and editing. As a member of a small production crew, i am ultimately responsible for the overall vision and creative style of my film. A film director must visually define the style and structure of a film ensuring that the film has been shot and produced in a certain way to create a good cinematic experience for an audience. A director has several main duties including
• Casting
• Script editing
• Short composition
• Shot selection
• Editing.
I will also be part involved with filming taking on the role of camera man at times to help out the group when filming helping to ensure all shots required have been shot from several different angles to ensure we have all the footage we need to edit our film. This job role involves me operating the camera maintaining composition throughout filming usually the camera operator works closely with the director however as I am the director I will have to work closely and consult other members of my group for a second opinion when instructing actors on set, ensuring they are aware of what they are doing on set. The key skills i require for this job is to be able to choreograph on set framing shots correctly to achieve a desired effect on screen. I must also be able to communicate well with others including my cast and other crew members especially as time constraints are present therefore we are working alongside a deadline.
